Chelmsford tops league of Britian's clumsiest drivers

In a national poll of the UK’s biggest towns and cities, Chelmsford has topped the league of Britain’s clumsiest drivers, according to new research.

In the survey carried out by Autoglass, four out of ten people (38%) people questioned in Chelmsford admitted to wreaking havoc on roads and in car parks with their poor driving and bad manoeuvres. And when their clumsiness caused damage to another person’s vehicle, more than a quarter (27%) said they wouldn’t own up or offer any compensation for the damage.

The ‘League of Clumsy Drivers’ names Chelmsford at the number one spot, closely followed by Brighton & Hove, where 37% of drivers admitted to being clumsy and Bristol where it was 35%. Cardiff and Manchester came in fourth and fifth place.

According to the research, the costly damage caused by Britain’s clumsy drivers ranges from dented doors and scratched paintwork, which accounted for a quarter of incidents (25%), to scuffed bumpers, broken lights and smashed wing mirrors.

The poll revealed that the most likely hot spots for clumsy driving are supermarket car parks and residential streets, which together account for one in five occurrences. One in 20 (5%) of those questioned also admitted to scuffing cars in their work car parks and not telling the boss.

And if you think it’s just women who are the clumsiest drivers, think again. As many men are responsible with 31% owning up to accidently bumping another car compared to 29% of female drivers.

The Clumsy Driver League:

1. Chelmsford
2. Brighton & Hove
3. Bristol
4. Cardiff
5. Manchester
6. Southampton
7. Liverpool
8. London
9. Birmingham
10. = Cambridge and Edinburgh

Nigel Doggett, managing director at Autoglass, who commissioned the research, said: “Whether it’s opening your door too wide and hitting the car parked next to you, or misjudging the distance between your own and another vehicle when parking, accidents do happen – and according to our research, very frequently. It is astounding how many people admit to being a clumsy driver.”
