Windscreens could not weather the Beast from the East - Northern Ireland sees biggest impact with Autoglass reporting 52% increase in windscreen damage in just one day

Following this week's extreme weather, Autoglass revealed today a dramatic increase in windscreen damage, as freezing fog crept across the UK. The leading vehicle glass repair and replacement specialist has seen a 29% increase in motorists suffering cracked windscreens across the country over the last few days.

Coleraine, in Northern Ireland was the busiest Autoglass branch, followed by Aberdeen in Scotland which experienced sub-zero temperatures and where calls to fix windscreens grew by 350% and 264% respectively, compared to previous week when there was no frost.

The south of the UK did not escape: The Autoglass branch in Salisbury saw an increase of 163% of windscreen replacements and in Gloucester an increase of 125%.

Call outs by fleet customers also ballooned, with requests to fix windscreens up just over 52% compared to last week.

Matthew Mycock, Managing Director of Autoglass commented:  "We have been ramping up our resources in preparation for the busy winter period. But the dramatic surge in windscreen replacements when the Beast from the East hit, shows exactly what can happen if you don't get a chip repaired and a cold snap strikes.

We have plans in place to make sure we can be there for all the customers who need us. This includes making more staff available in the worst hit areas, as well as asking some of our sister companies in Europe to be on stand- by for additional support should we see prolonged extreme temperatures.

The overall UK picture reveals the Beast from the East impacted in all regions, in terms of an increase in windscreen damage. Autoglass reported the North saw an increase of 34%, the South followed closely behind with 33%, East and Central regions saw an increase of 29% each, and finally the West saw an increase of 26%.

This winter Autoglass has already trained back office staff to assist on the front line in branches and its teams of technical trainers will also be going out to serve customers if extreme conditions continue.

Autoglass has released a helpful video for UK motorists, outlining simple tips for preparing vehicles taking to the roads this winter.
